A little note for first-timers

Curious? You’re in the right place.

Never been to an Ecstatic Dance? Wondering if it’s for you?

You don’t need to know how to dance.

No experience, no pressure. Come alone or with friends.

Some people dance wildly and love to connect with others. For some, it’s more of a solo journey. There is space for everyone here.

One possible side effect: you’ll want to come back. It’s addictive!

New to this?

What is

Imagine a dance floor: incredible music and everyone enjoying the moment.

Now imagine it barefoot, completely sober, with no steps to learn and nobody to impress.

Welcome toEcstatic Dance Koh Phangan

Watch the short documentary
  1. No choreography. Follow the music and move your way.

  2. Keep conversation off the dance floor, so you can drop into the music.

  3. Leave your shoes at the door. We dance barefoot.

  4. Put your phone away and enjoy being here.

  5. No alcohol or recreational drugs. The buzz comes from music, movement and dancing together.

  6. Dance how you feel, while respecting others and their boundaries.

One of the best experiences I’ve had on Koh Phangan.

Flow / France

Come as you are. Move however you feel.

Your first dance
The shape of the dance

We begin together. We dance together. We close together.

Every dance is a shared experience. Your Ecstatic Dance host, supported by the DJ, guides us gently from stillness into movement. The music flows through waves of energy, building to lively peaks, easing into quieter moments and rising again, before slowing down for our shared closing.

  1. ArriveSettle in, take your shoes off and find your space.
  2. OpenWe begin together and bring the room into one shared experience.
  3. MoveThe music starts gently and the body begins to respond.
  4. BuildRhythm, energy and intensity gradually rise.
  5. PeakThe journey reaches its highest point.
  6. ReleaseEnergy begins to soften and open out.
  7. LandThe music gradually brings everyone back down.
  8. CloseWe come back together and finish the experience as a community.

Hundreds of individuals. One shared experience.

First time?

Your first dance, step by step.

First time? No problem, we’ve all been first-timers. You’re in the right place.

Wear something comfortable. Bring water. Arrive a little early.

The music begins gently, moves through waves of energy and gradually softens before we close together.

There are no moves to learn and no expectations to meet. Just follow the music and enjoy.

  1. Take your shoes off, find your space and get comfortable.

  2. A host guides us into gentle movement, supported by the DJ. Time to slowly warm up, get comfortable in the space and awaken your body.

  3. Starting gently, the DJ weaves different genres and rhythms through waves of energy. Expect lively peaks, playful moments, quieter pauses and a few surprises.

  4. Dance, stretch, take a break or sit quietly. Drink water, catch your breath and return when you’re ready. There’s no one to keep up with.

  5. Towards the end, the music slows and softens. People often lie down, rest and take it all in. Live music often supports this gentle ending, followed by a few closing words from the host.

  6. Rest, recharge and come back for another dance. You might have just found your new favourite habit.

Community

Meet your people. Leave smiling.

Dancing together on Koh Phangan since 2016, we’re an established community with a playful spirit.

Locals, travellers, first-timers and familiar faces. People who love music, movement and having fun. Come on your own or with friends, there’s a warm welcome waiting.

A space we create together.

A few shared agreements help everyone enjoy the dance and respect those around them.

  • No talking on the main dance floor

Conversation is welcome off the dance floor.

  • No alcohol or recreational drugs

    Both dances are sober experiences.

  • Respect personal space

Physical contact is optional. Connection must be mutual.

  • Phones away

Keep the dance floor free from screens and filming.

  • Be aware of others

Give others room to move and respect their boundaries.

  • Children under 12

Welcome at the event, but not on the main dance floor.

Health & wellbeing

Good for body and mind.

Ecstatic Dance isn’t therapy. But there are simple reasons people leave feeling better than when they arrived.

  • Real movement

Hours of free dancing raise your heart rate and work your whole body, at your own pace.

  • Mood & stress

Dancing can lift your mood and ease stress.

  • Presence

No phones, no talking, no alcohol. Attention settles into your body and the moment.

  • Connection

Sharing a dance floor, even without words, builds a quiet sense of belonging.

  • Energy

Tired in the best way: clearer and more awake.

  • Your own pace

Dance hard, move gently or rest. You decide what your body needs.

Learn

How it began

From the roots of Ecstatic Dance to our Koh Phangan island community.

  1. Roots

    Conscious movement

Modern Ecstatic Dance grew out of practices such as Gabrielle Roth’s 5Rhythms: free, unchoreographed movement as a way back into the body.

  2. 2000–01

    Born in Hawaii

At Kalani on Hawaii’s Big Island, Max Fathom brought conscious movement together with electronic music. The DJ-led, sober, barefoot format took shape.

  3. 2016

    Koh Phangan begins

Tristan Gorski and Yulia start a Wednesday dance at Jaran’s Yoga. Sandesh begins the Sunday dance at Pyramid Yoga that becomes RISE.

  4. 2017

    Ecstatica is born

A New Year gathering at Jaran’s grows into Ecstatica, a larger celebration of the weekly dances.

    Watch the Ecstatica story
  5. Today 2026

    A living weekly culture

SOULFIRE at AUM every Friday. RISE at Pyramid Yoga every Sunday. A community that keeps coming back.
